TIN: “I don’t need to go any further.” One woman finds herself home

Anita Smith was homeless when we met in 2009, and it wasn't her first experience without a place to live. She's a single mother, survivor of addiction and domestic violence.

Full disclosure: Anita's one of my friends, and one of those friends you might say is more like family. After knowing each other for 15 years, I feel secure saying “we're in it.” She's a forever person for me. We've worked together in many capacities over the years. She sang at my wedding. She's seen me through some of the hardest times I've known, and I've watched her get thrown around by life over and over again.

Today, Anita’s signing the lease for a new studio apartment in a shared home in Nashville. And it’s been a hard time getting here.

This feature I produced is in part 5 of a 9-part series on homelessness called In My Place on This Is Nashville.
